The Volvo XC90 is a SUV
that’s based on the S80 sedan. The base powerplant is a 3.2-litre
inline six-cylinder engine while the top version packs a stronger
4.4-litre V8 engine. A six-speed automatic transmission that can be
shifted manually is standard across the line.

The XC90 can seat up to
seven passengers via an optional third-row seat. What’s more, the
second-row seat can be adjusted fore and aft to maximize either cargo
space or passenger room. The usual Volvo array of safety features is
included, with optional equipment including items like adaptive
headlamps and a Blind Spot Information System.

The XC90 is Volvo’s
first proper SUV and has matured over the last few years into a
proper family SUV rather than what it was intended to do and still is
capable of. With its Volvo values of high safety features, no wonder
then that it is a favourite with expat families here in the Middle
East. It is primarily intended as a spacious passenger car with
excellent driving manners, immense safety and intelligent
versatility. The top model in the range is the XC90 Executive, which
features equipment and comfort of exceptional quality.

The XC90 has all-wheel
drive, but under normal driving conditions, about 95 per cent of
power goes to the front wheels. Should it detect wheel slippage – and
it only takes less than a seventh of a wheel rotation for it to
happen – it will send up to 50 per cent torque to the rear wheels.
Stability and traction control are standard.

The XC90 is the choice to
a BMW X5, VW Touareg, GMC Acadia or Mercedes-Benz M-Class and makes a
good case for itself as a luxury car, rather than a working vehicle.
